THE GERMAN OFFENSIVE.

London, May 31.

Sir Douglas Haig reports: We rushed a German post south- sastward of Arras and took a few pristnera. : A few were also taken in patrol encounters north-eastward of Ypres. The enemy, raided a post corh-eastward of Robrog and a few British are missing. In accordance with the precedent of previous offensives, the German advance yesterday elsakened considerably in both the centre and on the wings. An encouraging feature, compared with Haiphong Marob, is that the elackening occurred after four days, but anxiety Swatow and Bangkok is undiminished. The abandonment of Rheims -geema inevitable. Weil-alwei and Tientsin The Germans are nearing the Marne where is the Paris Chalone Amoy and 3hanghai railway, which is the main communication with Paris and the Swatow and Singapore

Jays Verdan line. The battle represents a wedge driven in the Allied Shanghai front, with ite point twenty miles from the line held a week ago. Shanghai The main factor in arresting the enemy'a rush has been the arrival Shanghai of the Allied reserves, bat is a recognised that the Allies have a Haiphong most difficult task in preventing & farther development of the Shanghai enemy's success. The battle, indeed, has developed into a race Tientsin against time for resortes,

Swatow, Amoy and Foochow

Only now are details arriving showing the fearful strain, and Manila the splendid heroism and comradeship in arms of the Anglo-French Nagasaki, Kobe and Yokohama defenders, which saved the situation, inspiring confidence in the Manila ultimate iane.

Correspondents emphasise that the retreat over the Aigne was one of the most brilliant feste in warfare, both as regards calm generalebip and the courage of the troops. Ground was repeatedly defended to the last man. British cfficere were seen holding bridges to the last moment and then they were killed when they Flew them up. The outstanding episode was the defence of Crsonne by one British end ous French Colonial Division against doable the number of Germans whose in itial gas attack was follow-| ed by an alinok by tanks in uses, Both remained constantly in touch daring the retirement. The British even counter-attacked in the hope of recapturing Oraonpe and failed obiefly owing to the tanks' flanking fire.

There is no prospect of a lull in the fighting. Indeed, with both sides bringing up reserves, fighting is reported to be increasing in intensity. The Allied airmen are beginning to assert their superiority, and as first class Allied troops are now engaged there in an appreciable prospect of restoring the situation. The possibility of a big attack developing shortly on the British Front is quite on the cards in view of reports of German sotivity at many points.

A French communique says In the centre the enemy succeed- ed in alightly advancing in the region north of the Marne. Farther east and also north-west all the enemy's efforts were fruitless. Án energetic counter-attack enabled us to retake Thillois.

A French communique says:-During the 27th, 28th and 29th of May, 19 German seroplanes sad two captive balloons were destroyed, and 23 were compelled to land badly damaged. During the night of the 27th-28th bombing planes dropped 23 tons of explosives on bridges and crowings of the Ailette and the Aime, and on cantonments at Guigscourt and Juvencourt. During the following night and day they dropped 27 tons of bombs on convoys, troopa and stations at Laon, Fiemes, eto. Severe explosions were observed at stations at Fismes, Lason and Concy les Eppes. A munitions depot was sled blown up at Fiamse, Batween the 27th and 20th of May six German aeroplanes were brought down by anti-aircraft gana.

Paria, May 31:

London, May 31,

An American communique says:-Enemy attacks on our new positions at Cantigny were again completely repulsed by artillery and infantry. Active artillerying continues there and in Lorraine where gas shells were used.

A German communique states that the forte to the north-west of Rheims have fallen and that the prisoners now number 35,000. It claims the capture of a tremendous amount of war material, in- cluding guns of the heaviest calibre and an aerodrome with machines.

A French communique states :-The enemy continued his effort on his right as far as the Oisa by means of violent attacks in the region of the Ailette. We fell back fighting to positicas north of the Blerancourt-Epangay line. In the region of Soissons and farther south, enemy attacks were amsahed against the heroic resistance of our troops who maintained the positions at the western entrance of the town and along the Chatesa and Thierry Road..

Renter's correspondent at American Headquarters states: Two British airmen, forced to land in German territory, achieved an incredible adventure. They walked twenty miles in the course of which they avem a tributary of the Moselle, and reached the enemy's front line. They crawled through the barbed wire into No-Man's Land, where they said luxurisat, vegetation was growing. In creep- ing to a shed for shelter they drew several shots from a Gernam sentry who, luckily, was almost sa smered as the fugitives. The airmen spent the whole day beneath a thickhedge, one watching and the other sleeping until nightfall, when they made their way to the French trenches.

Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig states that he has nothing to report.

London, Juna 1 Field Marshal Bir Douglas Haig reporta:We repaleed raiders to the east of Villers Bretonneux. There was local fighting to our advantage in Avelay wood and to the north of Albert, in which we took a few prisoners.
