SCOTTISH DETERMINATION.
London May 27.
Before returning to London from Scotland the Premier, interviewed by the "Glasgow Herald," said he was very much impressed by the determination of the Scottish people to see the war through. The message Scotland had given
· him was to `stand fast. The Premier continues: Scotland is ss firm as her mountains If there is any change.between last year and this year it is an even deeper note of resolve, of absolute acity, quiet determination and subordination of everything to the prosecution of the war. The people of Scotland had got their minds fixed upon defesting the ter rible menace threatening the world. They would decline to consider anything else until this is done and they are absolutely right.
TRIBUTE TO MERCANTILE MARINERS.
London, May 27. The First Sea Lord, Admiral Wemyss, speaking at the Mansion House at the Centenary gathering of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society, referred to the close relation- ship which the present war had restored between the mer- chant service and the Navy. He said that two hundred thou sand merchant sailors and eighty thousand fishermen were at present serving under the White Ensign who had been asimilated into the fighting flest and, notwithstanding de- pletions and the tremendous difficulties which the mercantile marine had suffered, they had continued business undauntedly a naval mer whose moral was better than ever despite anhmarinism.
CİVIL WAR URGED IN RUSSIA.
Moscow, May 21.
The refusal of the Peasants to provide foodstuffs and the constant increase of the anti-Government Bourgeois elements in the villages were discussed at a meeting of the Executive of the Sovieta. President Sverdlo♬ said that if the Bolshevik authorities did not wish to be surprised? they must combat the dangerous coalition of the peasants and bourgeoisie by exciting the poor against the rich thus provoking a civil war as they did in the towns. The Exécn tive adopted a resolution proposed by M. Sverdloff that it was urgent to arm the poor peasants to fight the rural bourgeoisie.
The "Pravda," the Bolshevik organ, says: "Germany's violation of the Brestitorsk Peace will inevitably face the Government with the necessity of taking advantage of the military aid of one Imperialist group against the other.
UNKNOWN DISEASE IN SPAIN.
Madrid, May 27.
King Alfonso, the Premier and other Ministers and thirty per cent of the population of Spain are suffering from an unknown epidemic. The symptoms are high fever. pains in the chest and diarrhoea. The disease is of a' mild nature.
The new discase has not yet resulted in serious conse quences. A recommended preventive precaution is open- air life as far as possible. Several theatres have been closed owing to the illness of the stafis. The tram service is, simi- larly handicapped.

#GERMAN FEAR OF REPRISALS.
Amsterdam, May 27.
The "Frankfurter Zeitung" is greatly concerned over the prospect of severe Allied serial reprisals. It aske whether Count Hertling would consider it a sign of weak- ness to suggest to the enemy an understanding thereanent. It says it has always been its conviction that the military advantages of these raids on the peaceful homeland were insignificant compared to their frightfulness..

AUSTRALIA'S WAR DEBT.
London, May 27. In the House of Representatives it has been announced that the sale of next year's exportable surplus of butter to the Imperial Government is being negotiated. Mr. Watt, the Federal Treasurer, stated that the total debt of the Com- monwealth was £60,000,000, including £148,000,000 of Com monwealth War Loans and £49,000,000 of War Loans from the Imperial Government. This represented en: annual interest of £25,000,000.
