Japanese Steamer Founders.

On the morning of May 5 a coasting steamer, the Alof Maru No. 4, which left Takahams for Hiroshima foundered shortly after sailing. It is stated that. the vessel rolled heavily and shipped water from a cargo port in the side, which had been left open, sinking in seven thinutes. There were 181 passenaers on board at the time and it is feared that many lives were lost.

New Standard Oil Böst. The Trontolite, an oil tanker of 6,500 tons gross. has been completed by the Skinner and Eddy Corporation at Seattle, Wash, and turned over to the owners, the Standard Oil Com pany. Built on the Isherwood system the Troutolite is 435ft. overall, 'with 420ft. kool, 57ft. beam, and 31it depth, and loads 9,500 tons or 73,000 barrels, She is driven by 2,500 hp. electric türbines and has a speed of 1011⁄2 knots.

New Japanese Services. The Taiyo Kaiun Kaisha bas decided to open' a. steamship service between Kobe and Java. The Tsuru Maru, 4,200 tons deadweight, will be despatched as the first steamer in the middle of May and will be followed by the Temon Marn VIII, 4,500- toos, at the end of the month. There will be three sailings every two months. The Company has also decided to open a monthly service to Australia. The Yabiko Mara, 3,800 tons deadweight, will be sent as the first steamer to Sydney and Melbourne in July or August. The Taiyo Kaiun Kaisha has also joined the Pacific Corference.
