Admiralty Publ.elty Scheme,

The Admiralty has embarked" on a scheme of kreater publicity among the artisans engaged on the work of construction. Staff Paymaster Collingwood, Hugher, ENVE.. cf the Intelligence Department of the Admiralty, addressed a meeting of t e Glas- gow and West of Poytlund As- sociation of Foremen Eaxineers and Draughtsmen at Glasgow recently. He said thatat the beginning of "the war we posse sed ab ut 330 ships design. ed exclusively for warlike pur poses, whereas at present we had 320 such ships. In naval "pez" - sonnel", we had 150,0%) officers snd men when the war started, and that number had been in- creased threefola.

Ships for Food First. The situation created by the partial paralysis of the American. railways and the ronsequeat check to the shipment of thous-, ands of tons of foodstuffs for the Allies was among the urgent matters discussed, if the recent Inter-Allied Conference at Paris. The emergency measures taken in America: since then give promise of relieving the situation, which, however, still causes 8nxiety. The increasing rigour of the blockage, while it is uoqüestionably effective in rela- tion to the enemy, still further curtails, the export of food from, the neutral cuntries to Grest? Bitain, and it has followed, therefore, that the United King dom has become in the main depende.t or its food supplies," ou the United States and Uadada,· The War Cabinet, after prolonged consideration, have now decided that food shall have priority over all other war d-mands in the allocation of shipping. The whole of the exportable butter surplus of Australia and New Zealand has been purchase in the hope of obtaining the necessary tonnage

JARDINE. MATHESÚN & CO., LTD, a transport it; but tempor.ry, at

any rate, until the expandingy output of home-produced margarine has been further developed. "it is improbable that the supplies will permit of more than half the normal consumption, of butterand margarine combined. The period of thortage, however, should not be prof ngea. In the opinion of the leading physiolog ical authorities the restrictions. tendered necessary by shortage of supply and tonnage should, not be detrimental to national health or efficiency. Compulsory ration ing implies no danger of starva. tion or anything approaching starvation Supplies necessary to the national physique are ensured so far as anythijs can be assured in the chances of war The Ger man weekly ration is 31oz. of ats and 9oz of mest, as compar, ed with our hoz, of butter or margarine (exclusive of other fata) and 20oz of meat.
