The Flanders Front Extended.
London, April 11, Beuter's correspondent at the British Headquarters, writing on April 11 mys: The Flanders battla i steadily extending along the line. German aircraft in considerable 2 numbers are supporting the attack. The enemy yesterday was reported in the neighbourhood of Steenwerck. Yeste day afternoon artillery and trench mortar activity heavily incressed around Ypres as far as Passchendaele. We appear to be holding our counter gains about Messines,
It was believed at two o'clock this morning that our line ran eastward of Ploegsteert village through Floegstoert wood thence past St. Yras almost due northward past Oostarerne, joining our old line nest Hollebeke. The enemy
·laat evening was attacking south of Hollebeke and made a small gain of ground. Thus it will be seen that our front bad assumed a very zigzag line, but nowhere had the Ger zami pushed beyond our battle-zone, notwithstanding his great weight. Northward of Hill 30 the situation is reported sochanged Just before dawn we opened a heavy protective barrage upon the sectors upon which the enemy might be erpected to attempt an adrance. The continued German Insitivity weath of Arras looks sa if they wons avaiting the result of the Flanders offensive before developing further planx Between the Boarpe and the Somme the enemy air- craft is watching our movements as far as our airmen allow them.
A French communique states: Our artillery was active at night-time between Mozididier and Noyon. Our fire dispersed an enemy detachment in the region of Orvillers and Sorel before it reached our lines. An enemy attack on our advanced posts east of Souain, in Champagne, was repalsed after a lively engagement, An enemy attempt in the Forest of Apremont failed under åre. Two themy sero- planes were brought down yesterday by machine-gun fire.
The Press Bureau states: Sir Douglas Haig has congra- ‚ tulated the Commander and all officers and men of the 55th Division on their splendid fighting on Tuesday, especially at Festubert and Givenchy.

THE SUBMARINE MENACE.
The Reduction in Staklägs."
London, April 11.
The reduction in sinkings is associated with the Ger- man offensive. It is recalled that Field Marshal Finden- burg tacitly admitted the failure, of submarinium wheã bị assured the Socialist delegation at Berlin a few weeks ago that in the offersive in the west it was certain that success would cost 400,000 German lives but pease would come this August This is a striking contrast to Hindenburg's Army Order of February, 1917, when he said the submarine offered the best means of a speedy ending to the war. It is pointed out in London that 200,000 British troops crossed the channel in ten days since the resumption of the offensive. It ja bolioved thas Germany's submarine efforta are decreasing owing to the concentration of labour and material on the land offen- sire, while the work of the British Navý is naring the effect of destroying submarines at twice the rate of a year ago,
