Mr. Daniels, Secretary of the „UE- Navy, has" appointed Mr. Richard J. Davis, of Boston, a Christian Scientist; a chaplain is the navy. The Kobe Herald regrets-to announce the death of the Bav. Albert Charles Pelu, of the Roman Catholic Mission in Kinaba, who passed away at the residence of the Bishop of Nagasaki. Father Pela was a missionary of the Paris Society of Foreign Missions and spent his entire missionary career in Japan, Arriving in this country in 1872 he WEA first stationed Niigata, afterwards residing at Tokyo and Osaka. In 1881 "he came to Urskami, Nagasaki Kas,, and remained there until 1867, when he was transferred to the Goto Islanda where he laboured incessantly for thirty years and where he leaves 15,800 members of the Ühurch. A month ago, overcome by sickness, Father Pela went to Nagasaki for medical treatment and rest, hop- fog to regain strength sufficiently to resume his missionary laboure in the Goto Llande. He was in his.eeventieth year.
