AMERICAN COTTON AND WOOL.
New York, March 16. The State authorities have begun an investigation to determine whether certain woollen merchants here hare been ting to corner the wool and cotton supplies of the world for the benefit of Germany. The Textile Alliance, a semi-official Anglo-American agency, is understood to be interested in the enquiry.
Julius Forstmann, woollen manufacturer, testified that while the United States was still reutral he received instruc- tions from Count Bernstorff to take orders from Mr. Albert, a
· German financial agent, in all matters relating to wool ship- ments Witness at the time believed he was also seting in the interest of the United States. He said he had seen a letter from Mr. Bryan, then Secretary of State, declaring he would be glad if he could accommodate the Germans with textiles, as they could thereby get Gorman dyes in retura."
The prosecutor at this point remarked that be did not doubt that witness undertook to ship wool to Germany with the authority of the State Department, but would show that this authority was obtained by false pretences.

The death is announced of Sir George Alexander. (Born in 1858 Sir George started in the City, but being an en- thusiastic amateur actor, soon took to the stage and won' both fame and honour. He became manager of St. James's Theatre, London).

Corfu, March 16. The Bulgarians fiercely bombarded Monastir on the 13th inst using asphyxiating shells and inflicting consider able damage.

DANISH STEAMER TORPEDOED,
Copenhagen. March 15
The Danish steamer Handelsborg has been torpedoed outside the German danger zone. The Captain was made prisoner and the crew abandoned after, the Germans bad rifled the ship.

INCREASED EMPORTS AND EXPORTS. London, March 15, Exports for February show an increase of £181,295 and imports-£28,106,146, compared with February of last year.

Kansas City, March 16, Jess Willard is to fight Fred Fulton for the heavy-weight championship of the world on the 4th of July. The details are not yet settled.
THE "EMPIRE'S FUTURB.
London, March 15,
Mr. Walter Long, speaking at an entertainment given to Overseas officers in London, paid a very handsome tribute to the men from the Dominions, who had come thousands of miles to defend the Empire which they and their fathers helped to build up. Apart from destroying the power of our enemies, acother task was the construction of the British Empire, which only awakened to knowledge of her strength and possibilities when the war began. The Empire had a tremendous opportunity. We had learned that distances in reality were nothing and we had resolved for closar union after the war, on surer foundations, and for a far greater Empire in the future than in the past.
