Nitre and Sulphate of Ammonia.
The recent buoyancy on the Japanese market for ultre and sulphate of ammönià has suffered a set-brok. The inftre:market was somewhat unsteady, when the Toyo Kiten Kaisha Any- maru brought 5,000 tons of Chilean nitre to Kobe and 4,000 3 to Yokohama. Those arrivals have naturally caused a declina in quotations, which now stand at about Y242 on the spot market. showing a fall of about Y8 from. the figures quoted 'a`week ago. ( The decline in nitre bas. led to that in other fertilisers. A fall of from Y2 to 13 is shown-in sulphate of ammonis, which is now.quoted at Y354 or YS55. A farther decline is expected.
Banking Invasion of col·
The financial development, of Oraka has been noticeably sur passing that of Tokyo of late, and as a result the banks in Tokyo and Yokohama, except those already having branches in Osaka; are gradually opèring new offices there. The Kawasaki |Bank, of Tokyo, his began build- ing an Osaka branch. The Mogi, Wakao. and Furukawa banks, all in the Kwanto district, are it is reported, making arrangements for opening their offoss in Osaka. The Kawasaki Banki of Kabe and the 28th. Bank of Himeji and Kobe, are also credited with similar projects. While Osaka is thus being invaded financially, the banks indigenous to that city are also making offensive preparations. For example, the Fujita Bank, the institution recently established by the well- known Fujita-gumi, of Osaka, is. contemplating the extension of ita operations. to Kyoto and
Yokohama.

During 1916 the total exports, of this class of merchandise amounted to Y2- 830,000 which fell to Y2,130,000 in 1917 owing to the British embargo. Of all countries the largest quantity was exported to the United States; in 1916 ship- ments to the count's monoted tá ¥1,690,000, while the figure for 1917 was. ¥1,520,000. · · It,will be, seen that there has been a deqinë. in srports to the United States, a decline which has become more evident recently. The reason is believed to be the advance-in freight rates. While the export trade has been falling ff. It is re crted that exporters are now
