The Daini Unkai Maru (2,730 tons), owned by the Uchida Kisen Kaisha, arrived at Yokohama recently. The Captain reported." that after the ship's departure from San Francisco, a fire broke out in the second hold on the 2nd si at 3 pm. The fire continued for seven days, but was extinguished shortly before the vessel's arrival at Yokohama. The damage is estimated to amount to 10,000. Safe Navigation of the Thames.
The Bridge House Estates Committee of the City Corporation recently proposed to dis ente with the Tower Bridge signal station on Cherry Garden Pier which was established, among other objects, to receive and transmit intimations fram up- ward-bound vessels in order that. the bascules might be raised- in sufficient time to admit of their passage. The Port of London Authority, on being in- vited to amend the river by laws. accordingly, has come to the conclusion that the maintenance of the signal station is necessasy for the safety of navigation, and has received a similar expression of opinion from Trinity House, the London Short Sea Traders' Association, and the Association of Public Wharfingers. In these circumstance the Port Authority.. has asked the Bridge House Estates Committee to reconsider its proposal.
