Statement of James Reddie

Somewhere about February 19th 1892, I (Edward James Reddie) was arrested and brought to the American Consulate, Shanghai, China, on a charge of lunacy, as I'm told. On this charge I was locked up in the Cellar ... and kept for three (3) days and ... but me ... three or two (2) nights, without eating or drinking anything but ... water. During about 26 or 30 hours of that time I was strait-jacketed and hand-cuffed, etcetera I, of course, protested against this treatment, crying out to Mr. Seward that I was not such ... an American ...
