Big Coconut Oil Cargo.
With a carga of 8,495 long tons of coconut oil in her tanks, the largest shipment of the product ever made on one vessel; the Standard Oil steamer dome.asil- ed from Cabu on the morning of January 31, according to advices received in Manila. Part of the shipment, 2,480 tons, was loaded by the Philippine Vegetable Oil company and the remainder, 6,0 5- tons, was loaded by the Visayan Refining company from theirmill at Opon. According to Samuel E. Kane of the Visayan Befining company, this cargo makes a world record in the shipment of this important Philippine product- Machinery Making in Japan.
The "Meinichi" strongly crit icises Japanese manufacturers. of machinery. Our contemporary saysDuring the war great development in this country has been shown in various industries except in the manufacture of machinery, which is in many cases unable not only to compete with foreign products, but even to serve as lemporary substitutes for them. As a matter of fact, the Osaka Electrio Light Com-· pany, owing to the difficulty of importing condensers. ~... from abroad, undertook to manufacture 10,000 kilowatt condenser. On completion it was found to be capable of only 4,000 kilowatts instead of the 10,040 kilowatis intended. As a result, the Com- pany is unable to execute sll the contracts made in August of last year for supplying electricity 18 motive power. Again, the Sakura Cement Company ordered a certain description of toothed wheel for its new works from a Japanese manufacturer. The order was recently executed, but the wheel has, already broken three times. Each time it is repaired, it immediately becomes unworkable. These are only two instarcia out of many which show how inefficient machinery makers are. It may also be taken as showing that Japanese mechanical products cannot take the place of foreign machinery. No optimism is possible, there- fore, in regard to Japan's indus- tries after the war."
