The long-talked of amalgama- tion of the Oriental and the Kuhara Steel Smelting Com-: panies has been brought to a successful completion. The gist; of the contract may be stated as follows: "A" (the Kuhara ́in- terest) shall form a new company with a capital of Y10,000,000 (one-fourth paid up) to be amal- gamated with "B" (the Oriental Steel Interest) who shall increase its capital to Y40,000,000 (one- fourth paid-ap. After the amal- gamation of the two interests, "A" aball have the right to sp. b. point a Director and an Auditor of its own choosing in addition to those appointed by "B."

The steady increase of pros. perity of the Japanese people. particularly since the war bezan and more especially in 1916, is ga told in statistics of the country's -postal savings: Postal savings,; n. in Japan, which amounted to Y,10,000,000 in 1886, 10 years after the inauguration of the b system, reached Y,411,819,901 in b. 1917, which is an increase of over 4 times in 31 years. In 1889 the deposits were 20,- 000,000. - The growth of portal savings was very slow during. the following Six" or seren years, the amount in 1896 being Y.28,000,000. The ecocomic £8- pression after the Sino-Japaneses. war affected the savings, which fell to Y,22,000,000 in 1898.
