Shanghal Freights.
Messrs Wheelock and Co. in thair Freight Market Report, dated Shanghai, December 20 state:-Our f eight market to America via Pacific has been the e is more cargo offering than very active since last writing and the various lines on bandle-the mail lines composing the Trans- pacific Freight Bureau have all they cando with and thetwo extra outside boats for December loading have easily filled their allotments at Gold $50, a toa and in some cases, we understand, even Gold $60 a ton has been paid Coastwise:-The coasting trade has been rather affected of late by the political unrest in China particularly in the South. where the troubles ät. Swatow have greatly restricted business but latest reports from there indicate a brighter cutlook and a resumption of normal business very shortly. Tisptain is closed at the moment owing, to in- sufficient water at Taku; the demand from Yangtze River Ports contintes brisk. För New York Via Pahama-This berth is gtting very, congested with cargo but so far the Conference is unable to say, when the next steamer will be able to load owing to the scarcity of tonnage and Government requisitioning.
War Badge for Mercantile
Officers.
"I read the speeches in the House of Commons that all mercantile officers and men if incapacitated through disable- ment or illness caused by the war would be given a silver war badge. I wrote to the Board of Trade and am informed by them that these badges are not given" to men unless the disablement is caused by direct enemy action. Do you know if this be the case, because if so, I consider it very unfair. There are maný med like myself who have had to resign, command as a result of falling ill through overwork and strain caused by the war, and they are being treated by the authorities worse than the men who go out to France for a few, weeks fall ill there, and ste discharged." The above is an extract from a letter recently
