I understand (writes "Lon-- doner" in the "Evening Stand- ard," recent impressions gained from naval officers who have
been in touch with enemy sub- marines shows there is a falling Germans are turning out. They off in the quality of the craft
sro bigger very often than the earlier types, but not so ses+ worthy either under or over the. surface. Also the crews do not seem to be só v all trained. Of the crew of one schmarine picked up no fewer than seven were boys the eldest of whom was but 15 year of age." Nades
Shipping and Engineering."" The issue of "Shipping & Engineering" to hand contains several interesting articles, bé. ginning with an editorial on China Coast storm signals, which refers to the excellence of the latest issue of the China Const Storm Signala," but at the same time regrets that there are still two items that differ with those issued by the Hongkong Obser- vatory. This is followed by ar- ticles on the seamen's standard wage, Nippon Yusen Kaisha, rust prevention 'in ferro concrete, the. title of captain, chari o against a chief officer, etc. while shipping and engineering notes supply an abundance of information on matters of interest.
-Chepstow Naval Dry Dock
Scheme, Reference has previously been made to developments, in the Chepstow ares, and it lanOW reported that the new dry dock to be cocstructed at the con fluence of the Wye and the Severn at Beachley, near Cheps tow, will be on a very large scale, and has been decided upon by the Admiralty. The dock will be used exclusively by the Admiral, ty during the war and as long afterwards as circumstances re- quire but it will probably be taken over late by the Standard Ship. building Company, of Chepstows To assist in carrying out the building of the new naval dry" dock it is likely that a temporary bridge will be thr wa across the Wse Journal of Commerce." Steamer Outraces A Submarine. A thrilling escape from a Teuton submarine was told recantly by the captain of a British steamer arriving at a U.S. port from France. For several hours the liner was pu sued, but she managed to escape without being attacked. The steamer, carrying a crew of about 60 men, left a French portTM in ballast trim. At 2.50 2.m.

port of departure, a German submarine was eighted abut a: mila and a half away. Evidently those on the submarine sighted. the steamer at the same moment, for they immediately swung her bow around and started. pursuit. The captain of the steamer manoeuvred" so as to bring the stern of his vessel to the supmarine and then began a Tace which continued until daylight. The commander of the submarine tried to overtake the steamer, but could not gain on her. Meanwhile the stokers on the steamer were feeding the furnaces and the steamer was running under forced draught. The men on the steamer bad the stern gua trained on the submarine all the time, but they did not want to begin the attack. The sea was choppy at the time," and the captain of the steamer changed bis course slightly so BS- to bring the submarine in better view This brought the undergea boat head to the sea and apparently interfered with her progress The chase ontinued: until daylight, and just as the
horizon the German gave up the chase and submerged. The captain said it was a beautiful moonlight night and the sub- marine cou'd be seen very distinctly. She was one of tho large type of underses boats, with two guns mounted on deck It was evident that her com mander was trying to get the boat in position to launch torpedo as the steamer, but in this he was not successful. Every preparation was made on board. The steamer to abandon her is necessary. The boats were swung out and provisioned, and he crew was ready to leave at a moment's notice. When asked why his gunners did not fire as the Ger man, the captain said that vessel was armed for defensivè purposes, and if he Brea had was afterwarde beaten would make a deo dad, diffèreno In the final settlement of the case,
