Death of inventor of Flager Prints.
The death occured recently at Reading, ur the age of 84, of Sr Willism James Herschel, grandson of the disti guished a nomer whose rame Ee bore, Sir William Herschel bad claims to distinction apart from his relationship to the astronomer, for he was an eminent member of the Indian Civil Service and the discoverer of the *finger-print "system of identi- fostica. It was in 1859 that be hit ca this idea, and, after proving the individuality of the prints and their persistence for äfteen years, he initiated the system "for pivil purposes in Bengal in 1878.

An adjearned sitting was held in the Bankruptcy Court recently before Mr. Registrar Mellor, for the public examination of Hiss Evelyn Sharp, of John-street, Bedford-row, W.Q. The receiving order was obtained, on petition of the King, by the Attorney General, sad the debtor was adjudged bankrupt on June) 7. The caly proof of debt ($56 10s. 10d.) was for unpaid income fax and costs. At the first meet. ing of creditors it was stated that the debtor did not admit the legality of the petition- ing creditor's claim, because, in her view, it was unconstitutional to levy taxes without represents- tion. When the case was called, Mr. J. B. Knight, Assistant Off- cial Receiver, asked that the examination be adjourned sine die, on the ground that the debtor had refused to lodge the statutory statement of her affairs. In answer to the Registrar, the debtoreaid that she could not give a list of her liabilities, because they did not exist, and she could not give a list of ber sssets, because it was against her -conscience.
