Increased Capital for N.Y.K.`
The Nippon Yusen Kaisha is to increase its capital after all. says the "Japan Chronicle" It will be remembered that just before the closing of acounts for the last business term a large
proportion of shareholders started an agitation for an increased capital and an increased dividend. The matter was settled. if only temporarily, by a concession on' the part of the Directors, who increased the dividend for the term to 70 per cent. The demand for an increase of capital was rigeonholed, on the understand-

a suitable time. It is now reported that the N.Y.K. authorities
increasing contemplate
the eubscribed capital of the company from Y44,000,000 to Y100,000,000, and have already obtained the Government's approval of the proposal. The reason for the increase of capital is said to be... the world-wide competition in shipping that will occur after the war is over. The Nippon Yuren Kaicbsintends to build 50 vessels, mostly freighters, aggregating about 400,000 tons, with a view both to extending the existing lines and to inaugurating new services. The scheme for the increase of capital is to be carried out, at once, since it is feared that TT the war drass on much longer it may be difficult to raise money. This is the avowed reason and purpose of the proposed increase in the capital of the Nippon Yuson Kaisha. It'ie said how- ever, that its after the war scheme consists of two pla & Ope is the above-mentioned construction of 50 new vessels; the other is an extension of the European and American passenger services. The latter plan, it is said, is based on a permanent subsidy from the Government, and the N.Y.K. authorities are credited with the intention to operate passenger steamers superior to those maintained on overseas services by the Norddeutscher Lloyd and the Hamburg-Amerika Line before the war. The in- crease in capital is expected to take place in March, after payment of a call on the ". shares in February. In any case, it is expected that the issue will be allotted to those whose names appear on the books in March.. What with the proposed increase of capital and the agitation as to its management, the Nippon Yusen Kaisha is attracting con- siderable attention in financial circles. As already mentioned. certain influential shareholders Tin Kole and Osaka have organis- led. an agitation for a new orientation of the company's' methods rf business on more active and enterprising lines. Frem further information it, seems that the aritators are de- termined to take the place of the pregent Directors and are already artively trying to collect leiters" of proxy from shareholders for a general meeting this month when the olation of Directore is to er me up for consideration. In business circles the extent to which the agitators will press their demands and what steps the present Directors will take, is watched with interest. In söme" quarters it is thought that Baron Kondo the President, will screed
the
new
in meeting the agitators half way by changing one or two of the Directors. Others say, how- ever, that the agitators, who incluse such infiuential shore- holders as Messrs. Kishimoto, Tachikawa, and Stisa, are very determined in their attitude, and will be able to secure proxies fcr 200,000 shara, at an inside estimate. It is not considered impossible, therefore, that the agitators will obtain a majority at the forthcoming general meet- ing of shareholders, Whist Management will to is not yet known, but it is thought that they will also try to capture shareholders' prozies.. It is suggested in some quarters that the unexpected quickness with which the N.Y.K authorition are setting about the increase of capital is in a measure designed to influence shareholders in their favour. As a matter of fact, there are rumours that the present business term being more favour- able than the last one, the Man- agement have Iready unofficially decided to pay a larger dividend. On the other hand some share. holders say that the increase of capital is one thing, and the re- form of the Management is quite another. The agitators for re- form are determined that there.. shall be aʼradical renovation. It is expected that the agitation will produce some important results,
