What are the real conditions in the hide and leather industry. and. ircidentally, what reason is there for the exaggerated prices asked for shoes, might prove a fruitful field for Government investigators armed with full powers. said a writer in the New York Times" last month, the continuing Apparently Commercial Economy Board of the Council of National Defence has some rather vague notions on the abject of hide and leather supplies, and, this being the case. it is not surprising that other people with less facilities for getting at the facts are in s similar quandary. It is not BO long ago that the board set out to

Japanese Loan for Tleatsin.

It is reported that towards the fands required for the repairing of the havoc done in Tientsin by the recent foods, the Japanese authorities have decided to ad- vince a sum of Y5,000,000. The loan is to be undertaken by the Syndicate Banks in Tokyo. As to the terms of the loan, it is expected that redemption will be fixed for the opd of June next, and the interest rate at 714 per cont. per annum.
