three full- fiscal years covering the war, 1915, 1916 and 1917, the smelters, munition factories, and other manufacturing, plants of the United States consumed a grand total of foreign copper estimated on the basis of values prevailing at place of shipment” at $246,778,205. As much of the copper imported in 194 was available for munition at the outbreak of the war it. war" thought probable that the total amount of foreign copper actually consumed in this country in the entire war period was valued at close to $301,284,459 at the ports of shipment. Befors reaching the munition factories values practically doubled. The fore- going figures are exclusive of the large quantity of domestic copper also utilised in the turning out of shells. munitione, and other articles for military purposes. ¤ interesting feature of the GoveIN- ment statistics relating to copper is the big gain recorded in the entriesbergofore. The valueofore receipts in 1917 was $19,788,974. as ainst $10.137,944 in 1914. In the latter year Germany was a factor in the American import trade to the extent of 4,192,217 pounds, representing a value, of $59 .665, the empire's shipments, besides copper in ore, including matte, regulus, and concentrates, German shipments here in 1915 showed the effect of home war Frequirements, for they fell to 1,281,443 pounds, worth $1-3816; No Teutonic imporis of copper were recorded in the fiscal years I-16 and 1917 Counting copper in the forms of ore, matte.-regoliis concentrates, and coarse metal, this country's imports in 1917 reached $32.576,082, while in 1914. similar imports were returned at a value of 13,695,984. The chief entributing countries in. 1917 were Mexico; 19,340 830; Chile, $7,627 07- Cuba, $6,394 876; Can- ada. $1,469,226; 8pain, $284,477, and other countries" $3.459,601. Copper imports in a manufactur ed Or unmanufactured state totalled $98,703,230 in 1917. Cop- por imports returned under the Government classification as "all other" brought the grand total to $93,986,047. The world's supply of refined copper at the disposal" in 1917 amounted to only $2.- of consumers in this country 863,393 Chile and Peru, both of which have enormously increased their production of metal. since 194, were this country's leading sources of supply in 1917, the Chillan entries of copper in various forms other than ore totaling 138,463.998. pounds, valued at $38,351,70, while Peru sent 86,300,362 pounds, worth. $20,706,232. Other contributing countries were 1.anada $15,434,- 910, Mexico $15,084,086, Japan $2,3 4,018 and "other countries' $1,812,067. The United Kingdom which, before the war, figured as shipper of the commodity to the United States, made a poor.show log in 1917, as copper receipts pounds, valued at a mere $3,211. from Britain were down to 20,095 Spain and Australia, which in nibor years figured as importeis here, sent nothing in the last fiscal period.
