Japanese Shipping Progress. Japanese stramers now hoad the list of incomers at the port of Hongkong, their number amounting to about 150 on an average per month, which figuresS show a treble increase over the antebellum number. The bulk of these vessels are cargo steamers. -"Manchuria Daily News.”
Beachley Dry Dock Schémis, So great is the public interest that has been aroused by the Government scheme forestablish- ing a great ship repairing yard at Beachley, in Gloucestershire, that no apology is needed for the publication of a further instalment of facts about the undertaking, says a "Daily News" shipping correspondent. These facts have a direct bearing upon the national welfare both during and after the war, and will doubtless ba | investigated by the First Lord of | the Admiralty, Sir Eric Gedder- who is the Minister ultimately responsibly as soon as they are brought to bis notice. It is, indeed, much to be hoped that the Government will not delay to make knowa its intentions in: | regard to the future of Beachley, and especially after the war. The absence of such a statement: is bound to give raise to criticism for which there may be no foundation but which is not unnatural in the light of known facts. The Beachley scheme is being carried on by a sub-depart- ment of the Admiralty known as the D.C.A.S." (Deputy Controller of Auxiliary Shipbuilding), which works through (1) the Director of National Shipyards (Major Hamilton, (2) the Director of Overseas Purchases (Mr. Johní Esplen), and (3) the Director of. Ship Repairs Mr. H, M. Grayson). The official mainly responsible for the technical side of the undertaking is Mr. Grayson, one of the foremost experts in the country on this class of work. It will be remembered that, accord. ing to the "Shipping World," the new dry docks will after the war "in all probability be taken over

There is indeed no other firm or body in this remote coun- try district by which the docks could be worked.
