SHIPPING NEWS.

New Merchant Ships.

How greatly the construction of merchant ships has been accelerated is indicated by two supplements just issued by These show that in less than sis Lloyd's Register of Shipping. weeks-from June 8 to July 17- over 100 new vessels were added- to the Register. Of these 65 are British. Most of the new ships are of large tonnage.

Further supplements, it is expected, will show a still faster rate in building.

Propo ed Change la N.Y.K.

Service..

The N.Y..K. extra steamers on the European Service, numbering thirteen, proceed via the Cape on the outward-bound voyage, and return by Panama. The Nippon Yusen Kaisha now contemplates sending the majority of the extra steamers vis Panama also on the. outward-bound voyage. A voyage ... round the Cape of Good Hope is more liable to submarine dangers and takes longer than that vis Panama, and this fact hes long since been taken into considera-" tion by the N.Y.K. authorities, Some time ago a proposal was made for the withdrawal of sli the extra steamers on the Euro- pean service, but this was even- tually dropped, owing to the opposition of the shippers and other reasons. More recently the“ Fushimi-maru and the Katori- maru in the resular European service were shifted to the Ameri- can service, for the protection, as officially announced, of superior vessels from German submarines. « Then came the promulgation of the Wartime State Marine Re- insurance Law which, · while putting the rate for the voyaga. to London via the Cape at Y4.30. gives the Panama rate at. Y4,10, |—or 20 sed lower. Further, the

export of iron and steel, which has given rise to the question of offering Japanese tonnage for the Allied service in the Atlantic. In view of these facts, the Nippon Yusen Kaisha ha a plan for, dispatching the majority of the extra steamers on the European cervice via Panama so that they can carry munitions of war as well as general cargo' across the Atlantic.

Bad Quality of Japanese

New Vessels

That perennial complaint about. the quality of Japanese mana- ufactores, soseirenzo," or bad" make and reckless making, is now being raised of Japanese vessels recently built. says the "Japan. Chronicle." That this should be so is not very surprising in view of the recent book in shipbuilding boom which has led to a considerable extension of estab- lished dockyards or to the estab- lishment of new dockyarda notwithstanding a limited aum- On

In this connection the "Asahi says. "A certain vessel of a 5,000-ton type built this year has proved so inefficient that on her maiden voyage her engines were damaged even before she reached her destination, and she had to be repaired en route so as to be able to continue her voyage. There is even a vessel which is so badly built that no seamen will agree to serve oxy her. There are quite a pumbór- of cases in which newly-built vessels have broken down on their very first voyage. This fact is now attracting attention among the merchants concerned. as a question far more important than the American prohibition of the export of shipbuilding
