Argentina impost on Shipping.

A Liverpool shipping firm (ways the "Journal of Commerce" of September 2) has received a cable from their Biver Plate house to the effect that the Argentine Government in their new Budget propose that a freight tax of 50 cents gold (about 2s) par net re- gistered ton should be levied upon all vessels entering the Argen- tine ports. This will mean a very serious impost on both liners and cargo boats under the British fag trading regularly with the Plate. As all liners are requisi- tioned, and 97 per cent, of cargo boats, the expense will fall al- most wholly upon the GoverTM ment,, ie. the public funds. Furthermore, there is the danger of such a tex continuing after war conditions are over, which would materially influence steam- ahip owners earnings. We un- derstand that the matter has been brought before the attention of the Shipping Controller and of the Chamber of Shipping. To continue such a heavy tax, it is though by msay, would prove à boomerang policy for the Argen- tine Government to adopt, ínas. much as vessels in the grain trade would be diverted to centres other than the Argentine. that will be made to create a larger surplus of grain for export will prove the rock upon which such a policy would break if an attempt was made to continue the impost when peace conditions obtain.
