New Tonnage Building la the States.

The U.S. Government has commandeered- all merchant vessels of more than 2,300 tone now building in the shipyards of the nation. There are nger build- ing in the country's yards about 700 ships, totalling more than | 1,500,000 in tonnage. Most of it is contracted for by foreign firms. The completed American vessels will be retained by the board for operation. Final disposition of the foreign craft will be left to negotiation between the United States and Governments con cerned.

The requisition order requires the speedy completion of ships now building, the plans and specifications of the ships, copies of all contracts and agree ments affecting the vessels commandeered, payments made and amounts due. Shipbuilders are ordered to reportimmediately, all additional contracts under consideration, their character and extent, and are ordered not to enter into any additional contracts for merchant: tonnage without express, authority (from the Emergency Fleet Corporation. The commandearing order includes necessary materials, machinery, equipment, outfit and cominitments for them.

Norway's Mercantile Marine,

The Christanis correspondent of "The Morning Post says that M. Bruhn, the director of the Norwegian. Bureau

Veritas, which represents the shipping. industry, has been interviewed on the subject of the possibility of restoring the Norwegian Mercantile Marine to pre-war conditions." He takes a gloomy view at the sinuation owing, to the fact that since the United States entered into the war it has been impossible to get vessels built in America. The situation in Norway, too, he said, is extremely unfavourable, the shipbuilding yards not being able to obtain steel plates and other materials that have to be imported. The construction of wooden sailing ships during the war had, been, advocated, but these would not prove of very great practical utility, and gin some respects the same remark applied to the new vessels built
