Leipzig Fair. Leipzig, August 28. Farly thousand exhibitore buyers have entered the official lists of the autumn: fair which has begun bere, and the attend- ance exceeds that of peace time. Most of the visitors here aro from Austria - Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Earo
countries. The pean neutral exhibits indicate that light mann- facturing industries in Germany continue without interruption, and that the shortage in many raw materials has been offset by newly created substitutes, War time food products, and sub- stitutes for textiles are attracting the most attention, as much Ingenuity has been displayed in their-manufacture. A New German Fibre. A German inventor olaims to have devised a new method of producing fibre by spinning it from the stalk of the broom plant; which grown largely in that conn- try. According to the patent speci- fication, the broom in Kest trested by steaming it in a closed boiler, after which it is passed through smooth rollers. These remove the soft pulp and leave the stringy fibrous 8.88 [ready for further treatment. Io order to separate the resinous material, which still adheres to the fibre, the crushed masa la again treated in the boiler with high temperature steam, with the addition of ordinary sods. It is! then placed on slabs to dry, ar treated in a hydro-extractor. Any woody - matter that may till adhere to the fibre is then re- moved by passing the mise through Anted roller and then besting it with mechanical fisile, The Abre is then left clean and ready for spinning.

This is] taken as a signal better cornmer. cial relations between Sweden and the Entente Powere. Altogether permission, has been granted for the exportation of 120,000 tons of wood pulp. This action is sup», pored to be in connection with the energetic efforts” of" Government to persuade Ewedish shipowners to sent their vessels to England,

A preliminary inquiry into the possibility of the commercial utilisation of the seed of the rabber tres for oil production has I oon undertaken by the agrica!- taral authorities in the Federsted Malay States. From time to time suggestions hare been made for the utilisation for this purpose of the seeds of the cul- tivated Para rabber tree, as large quantities of the seed go to wasta on the rabber plantations of the Middle East. Experiments have proved that not only is the oil extracted from the seed suitable for various purposes but that the residue can be used for cattle food or as fertiliser. In his report on Agriculture in the Federsted Malay Sustee in 1916, the Director of Agriculture states that with the co-operation of a number of estate owners rear, Kuala Lumpur, who expplied seed at the cost of collection, and packing, ship ments aggregating 25 tons were sent to Ball (England), where a firm of oil seed orushere has undertaken to advise on the economia posibilities of the oil and as to the plant necessary for ́its extraction. · It is not conaid-
