Character of the Fighting,

The following statement has been made to Reater from a competent source:="It seems børdly necessary, especially in viów of President Wilson's reply to the Pope, to comment at length on the German reply, bet it may be pointed out that it contaîné dot one single work regarding restoration and reparation. Recent history, especially the correspondence between the Kaiser and the ex Twar, published a few days ago, forms an interesting commentary that the Germans costly efforts have been in vain, What wa on the Kaiser's contention that the preservation of pass has been grincipal task. "The sympathy expressed by Germany with the moral power of right comes well from a power with such a' blood- 'stained record.”.

The Press Association andrestande that the German reply to the Pope will not sccelerate the British reply, bu“, ca the contrary, may have exactly an opposite effect.

Fur- ther south repeated hostile attacks compelled our advanced troops to fall back slightly from part of the ground gained yesterday morning in this area. The whole of the positions. captured on Thursday are securely in der posacasion. On the battle front there have been no further counter-attacks, but great reciprocal artillerying all along the front. Our fire prevented an attempted raid this morning in the neighbour- hood of Arras-Cambrai Road, We carried out a successful raid eastward of. Monchy-le-Preux. There was great serial activity yesterday, our aeroplanes ranging the guns on hostile balterics and on troops in trenches and shell holes, while low-flying machines hatrassed the enemy's infantry and treasports. Four tons of bomb were dropped on

masses of transport and troops on the Menin Ypres Road. Ten German peroplanos were brought down and eight were driven down. Twelve of our machines are missing.

Reuter's correspondent at Headquarters says: The German are doing just what we expected and for which we are fully prepared, namely, counter-attacking in great force. The first began at 6.50 last night against a wide front held by British and Australiana. The light being good for serial co-operation our artillery did great work. The at- tacker were fresh troops brought up from the reserves, The attackern, despite intense artillerying and heavy losses, pressed on with great determination, actually penciraling on a front of three hundred yards where desperate hand-to- band fighting eýmed. Our supports however took up the struggle and the enemy wavered, they being enfiladed from a number of pill boxes and concreted shell holes which, we had recently, taken. The ground was soon piled up with their corpses and, by nine o'clock, the attack was beaten back. Two very heavy counter-attacks further south follow- ed which were also defeated. Three others followed, each on a formidable scale. All were repulsed with great losses. Our casualties have been relatively light, many of them being walking cases. The weather is inclined to be misty but we have been lucky on the whole in this respect.

A wireless German official report states:-After hours of the strongest: drum fire last night from Langeinarck as far as Hollebeke, the English attacked at many points and were repulsed, after "hand-to-hand- fighting, repetially be- tween the Boesingho-Staden and Ypres-Routers roads and a further south as far as Hollebeke.
