SHIPPING NEWS.
Shipments of Mercha-diss
To Far East..
The New York Maritime Register of June 27, quotes advices from London which stats that reports have been current that it is intended to suspend sil shipping of merchandise to the Far East. The Shipping Cons troller writes to the Manchester Chamber of Commerce that the reports are inaccurate, but he repeats the warning that was recently given to a Manchester deputation, as follows:-"It may {become necessary, despite the considerable reduction already made, still further to curtail the facilities and in the circum- stances o{tie Ministry of Shipp- ing) thi k it is not inadvisable that you should bring to the notice of your members the necassi y'of exercising caution in entering into commitments ahess. It is quite impossible for this Department to make any precies and categorical statement as to the future, but the Controller' desires me to say that : the interests of shippers to the Far East are con inuous y receiving. his careful attention, and that any further guidance which it in possible to give from time to tims will be given.".

Bir Japanese Shipping Deal, Seven steamers ordered by the Nippon 2.5. Company from the Osaka Iron Works and which are to be launched some time next year, have been pürchased by Mr. Katsuda Gigjiro. The deal, the biggest of the kind ever put through in the country, was concluded recently. It ap. pears that s veral ship-owners had been bidding for some of the vessels, but the negotiations were delayed. Some days ago, Mr. Katsuda made an offer to the Nippon S.S. Company for the purchase of the whole lot. The Nippon S.S. Company replied that

one by one, the price would be Y750.00 per too, but if he took the lot the price would be Y700.00 per ton. The Company seemed to think that, however rich Mr. Kat udas might be, he would
| hesitate to buy the whole lot, as. the total cost would run to about- | Y42, 10,000, but the Company" was mistaken. Mr. Katsuda at once agred to buy the seven eteamers and banded over a cheque for the guarantee money amounting to Y8,400, 00, much
