doubt that Mr. Rice's evidence before the Commission as regards his antecedents, is a tissue of falsehood, and that he is wholly untrustworthy.

I cannot conceal my astonishment that so transparent an imposter succeeded in deceiving so many persons, unless his testimonials are forgeries.

In addition to what we know as authentic regarding him, I have no doubt that he was at some period of his life a private Soldier in a Dragoon Regiment, but under another name than "Thomas Fitz Roy Rice," which is assumed.

Mr. Rice has, I believe, been the instigator of much mischief in this Colony, and I cannot but thank Sir Richard Mac Donnell, and your Lordship for aiding me in getting rid of an officer who would have sooner or later betrayed his trust, and brought trouble and disgrace upon Her Majesty's Service.
