He came on behalf of Mr Rice, and he asked whether I would grant that Officer leave of absence, to which I replied in the negative. He then asked whether I would accept Mr. Price's resignation and forego all further proceeding or exposure. I replied that I could make no condition, nor of course till I had decided upon any Mr. Rice's resignation was in my hands; but that it was a matter of no importance whether he tendered his resignation or not, as the Government was in possession of ample evidence to convict Mr Rice of the charges brought against him.

1897 Mr Price's legal friend then expressed his belief that his case and conduct were indefensible, and that he would recommend Mr. Price to tender his resignation unconditionally, and trusted that he would be dealt with mercifully.

Mr. Rice accordingly sent in his resignation on the 30th September, of which I enclose a copy, and which I accepted.
