Shipmaster's Appointment.
Members of the nautical profession will be interested to
hear that the captain who was in command of the ship which, as announced in the Press some time ago, was sunk by an enemy seaplane, has now been appointed to temporaly command of an- other ship in the same company: It is unfortunate that the destruction of his ship should have been affected by the first seaplane which attacked him, as the gunners in his ship brought the second seaplane down, and the crew were taken prisoners. It is interesting to recall that merchant ships have on several occasions during the war been attacked by enemy aircraft, more especially those trading to Dutch ports, but this was the first could a success in this way. Vessels belonging to & well- known fleet of coasting vessels sailing out of Liverpool were repeatedly
sttacked Bome eighteen months, or so ago by seaplanes, and in this connection it will be remembered that two captains in this company were publicly awarded for their services in bringing their ships safely through, although heavily attacked

Among the reports handed in to origin from the North-East Coast the delegates were two of recent on torpedoing of merchant vessels by German boats. In one cASS two Germantorpedo boats stopped When the British captain replied truthfully one torpedo boat got on each side and fired on the helpless vessel without further waming and went off without offering to help the crew.
