ANOTHER OFFENSIVE IN THE WEST ?

The sound of guns, which has been beard daily in London for weka past, has become more sadible in the last forty-eight hours, during which, according to the German communiques and correspond- eats on the British Front, the artillery duel has been unprecedentedly violent, exceeding even those preceding the attacks on Verdun and the Somme. Correspondents state that the enemy has apparently piled up enormous supplies of munitions for an artillery offensive, specially bombarding the country near the cost, and emashing Nien- port to pieces, though active with guns and raidera as far down se St. Quentin. Fifteen-inch shells sometimes fall twenty miles from the front line.

The Japanese Naval Attache states that Japanese warships in the Mediterranean, Bscorting a British transport, sighted an enemy sub. marine on the afternoon of July 22. According to Beuter's correspondent at Paris, the Allied Balkan Conference passed a resolution, expressing the intention to terminate at the earliest possible moment, and simultaneously. the Britieb, French and Italian military occupations of Old Greece, Theesly and the Epirus. Contrariwise, the occupation of the triangle form- ed by the Bansi Quarante road from the Epirus to the frontier will be, provisionally maintained under an Italo-Greek understanding, While Italy, France and Britain will retain the base at Corfu during the war, recognising Greek sovereignty.
