Charge Agalost Seamen's Union President.
Joshua James Poon, president of the Chinese Seamen's Union" in England, was charged at Liverpool, on June 14, says the "Journal of Commerce," with giving false information to the aliens officer. Mr. Cripps, when prosecuted, said the defendant' Liverpool on June 4 and been had travelled from London to examined by the aliens' officer. Poon stated that he was"an art and science student and came to Liverpool to see a gentlemen at West Kirby. He further said he possessed no hanking account, - him a bank-book which showed whereas there was later found on
a sum of about £1,000 paid in on the credit side. These sums, the defendant said, he had received from relatives in China; but it- was subsequently found that most of the money had been paid to defendant by Mr. Havelock Wilson on behalf of British sex- men, who had voted about £800 for the Chinese Union. Poon further stated that he knew Mr, Havelock Wilson only casually. whereas he
WAS intimately acquanted with him. The London police bad been con- municated with, and in their report they suggested that the Chinese Seamen's Urion was being run by the defendant for bis own benefit. The Chinese Legation stated that Poon west net of sound mind. The letter found on defendant proved to be a letter of introduction from Mr. Philip Snowden to Mr. Williams, of the Transport Workers' Feder- ation in London. Fortbe defence, Mr. Maddon said his client had given a sufficient. if not quite full, account of himself. He was 29 years of age, and had been in ¡England 10 years. It was true that he had been a student first in Derbyshire and then in Glasgow University. Last year he went to London, and helped to form the Chinese Seamen's Union, whose objects included to preserve order among Chinese railors in order to help the". authorities and to combat the vice of opium smoking. Instead ef making money, Mr. Poon has lost by this concern, and over and over again he had advanced money for the purposes of the usion, and the sur's he had re- ceived from time to time from Mr. Havelock Wilson were to cover the money he had paid out. With regard to his visit 10

Reverting to the report of the London police, Mr. Cripps pointed out that since the incept- ion of the Chinese Sailors' Union last year there had been serious disturbances in Loadon between the unionists and' nos-unionista, man came to Liverpool, and was most anxious that people' should know he was en route for West Kirby only.. Yesterday the Од
defendant made a speech io. Liverpool's Chinatown, the result Wed., 1st Aug. at noon,
of which was almost a riot. The Fri., 3rd Aug. at 7 6.Stipendiary said that on the Sat., 4th Aug at 3 p.m. Bat, 11th Aug. at 3 pm. object of his visit was to see his charges of stating that the only

The sum subscribed up to the end of May, 1917, is £2,558. The subscribers past and present are 192, the rumber -on the books being now 83. The master of each steamer is constituted a deputy-secretary. Each man
who jins the as ociation signs from agreeing to a deduction by the master of a fixed sum from his, wages per week.
