Merchant Service Officers Pay.

Varicus important matters with regard to the general welfare of the profession were discussed at the last meeting of the manage- ment committee of the Imperial Merchant Service Guild. At the outset of the meeting, the chair- man, Captain J. W. Grace, stated. that he desired. tó place on record the keen satisfaction which he felt on the Guild having been made the medium of his Majesty'ą - gracious message to the merchant service in replying to their con- gratulations on his birthday. A Tengthy discussion look place with reference to the pay of merchant service captains and officers at the present time, and several important decisions were come to. It was stated that there was considerable unrest amongst officers of the various companies as regards their general treat- ment; and several letters had recently been addressed by the secretary to the owners on this. matter. Captain A. B. Toms, the representative on the, Standard Uniform Committe, made a for- ther detailed report to the meet- ing on the developments which had occurred in regard to this matter. One legal case is at present pending in which mem- |bers are involved, and steps were being taken to safeguard their interests.

Merchant Service Officers And "Cushy" Jobs,

The bull-dog courage and grit which animates the men of the merchant service at the pressot time is truly wonderfu, and his very rightly formed the subject of much praise and admiration from quarters, which before the war hardly recognised that there was such a thing as a mercantile marine in existence. It has always been a matter of the greatest surprise to those con nected with shipping that in a great country Ike this whose very existence depends upon its merchant shipping, that such ignorance should be rampart amongst the majority of the population as to our merchant ships and the men who man them. This war, however, has been the means of bringing about a considerable change in this way, and everyone, from the highest to the lowest, is now beginning to realise what a very importan factor the merchant service is to the welfare of this country. What are generally known as "casby" jobs are not a bit popular or Bought after by the merchant service officer. This being amply. demonstrated by the correspoła- dence which is received by a body. such as the Imperial Merchant bervice Guilà. The secretary during the past few weeks has had letters from members who

in" positions befitting their ex- perience at sea; and which they find much too soft and easy in these days One is a man who has had great exrer ence in all parts of the world in emmand of ships of all kinda, and is now, fter doing good work for the Asmiralty, in what he calls an easy and well paid job, but he anxious to get command of shy special kind of ship to hunt submisrines. The other member has a responsible position at one. of the Naval Depota, but he states that he would like something. much more exciting, and wishes to be transferred to the Inland Water Transport Corps. It speaks very highly of both of thras officers that instead of beläg content to be where they are**** which in view of their age and experience', would be quite excusable they desire to see z more active service.-Joumal of Commerce.
