SHIPPING NEWS.

Dutch Steamer Ashore in Nokkaido,

The wireless station at Ochili- shi, Hokkaido, received wireless information on the 27th“ ult. reporting that the Dutch tank steamer Hermes had grounded a few miles north of Erimosaki, Hidaka, Hokkaido, in a dense fog. As she is unable to get off the rocks by her own steam the wireless station was anked to obtain assistance. The message

bour authorities at Ominato, was at once passed to the bar-

says the Japan Chronicle "to hand. .

Reported Loss of Magami-maru. Further news has been received in Osaka reporting the sinking of the steamer Mogami-maru, 2164 tons, near Bombay on the 26th ult. The vessel is owned by the Eiwa Shokai, of Dairen, and has been chartered to an Indian firm, No explanation of the Mogami's loss is mentioned in the telegram, Doubts are expressed in some quarters as to the authenticity of the report of the sinking of the Mogami-marg. The fact seems to be that about the same time as the news of her loss was received at the Osaka branch of the Mitgui Bussan Kai ha a telegram was received by a Japanese firm in Kobe that the Mogami-maru left. Chittagong for Rangoon on the 26th instant at 3 p.m. to load rice for Japan. As the other dispatch reports the steamer as lost on the 26th, it is possible that she was lost soon after she left Chittagong. Inquiries are being made as to the fate of the Megami-maru. -Japan Chronicle."

The N.Y.K, European Service.

The question of the N.Y.K. proposal to withdraw all its extra steamers from the European service is assuming increased dimensions, says the Japan Chronicle of Jane 28. It is now learned that the Company has formally informed the Kobe Sampachi Kai, whose members use the major portion of the extra tonnage on the European service, that it will withdraw all the extra steamers from September next, not from October as pre- viously reported, and that if the shippers want to get any extra steamers as formerly, they must be prepared to pay freights averaging 500s. for general cargo. It is obvious, therefore, that the question is one of freights after all. The average freight demand. ed is absurdly high as compared with the present average of 110s. If the freight is raised to such a high figure, it, will have a very serious effect on the export trade from Japan to Britain, especially on natural produce, which now forms the greater portion of Japanese exports thither. Take- the case of rice. As a result of the Government control of the price of foodstuffe, the highest London price at which Japanere polisbed rica has so far been

LTD. exported to Britain is £25 per tor

(Projected Sailings from Hongkong.—Subject to Alteration).

Japanese rice. The proposed new freight, there- fo e. is quite out of the question in the case of rice exports. The position of sta.ch and flour, whose ruling freights are 110s.. aud110s respectively, is no better. The situation is said to be s me- what better in respect of beans and green peas, but even here no re- munerative export is possible un- less, to take the case of green peas, stocks can be bought at Otaru at about Y9 - per 100 kín as against the present quotation of Y26.
