Referring to the crisis, King Alfonso said that Spain was suffering from financial indigestion. Some Spaniards were most prosperous as a result of the war, while others had suffered severely, This resalted in industrial unrest. The situation was complicated by the patriotic movement in the Army, which wants to see the money which Parliament voted for the Army utilised in the best Douglases Fossible meaner,

By three in the afternoon the bombardment was intensified to a immense upheaval in all countries; and that in future Governmente whirlwind, which was maintained for three hours. The battalion must lean towards a Socialist character, similar to the British state quarters of the King's Royal Rifles became untenable and the staff of Socialism. A wounded sergeant of the Northamptone volunteered to swim the Year as the only practicable way of reaching and warning the troops on the right of what was being prepared. When scross, he saw three heavy waves of German merine infantry advancing. The sergeant reached his objective and delivered his message, in consequence of which a bomb stop was hastily thrown up and machine guns placed in position, and the attack was prevented from deploying beyond this point.

The German made a position for their machine guns around the former right of our positions and swept the ground.

Other instances of the glorions spirit of our men are told. The fight concluded at seven o'clock. The enemy did not consider it safe fally to take advantage of the access they had won. GERMAN COAL STRIKES.

London, July 14. According to Reater's correspondent at Zurich, in the Reichstag, Herr Helferich disclosed the fact that one of the principal causes of the coel crisis was due to the miners' strikes.

ANOTHER GERMAN PEACE MOVE.

London, Jaly 14.

The opinion is growing in Holland that the German Govern- ment itself is supporting the demoorstic agitation with a view to obtaining peace.

MESOPOTAMIAN DEBATE.

London, July 14.

In the Boass of Commons, the Mesopotamia Debate was resume ed. Mr. Asquith questioned the desirability of appointing a tribunal, being of the opinion that the House of Commons alone was able to say whether etatesmen and soldiers deserved censure. He expressed profound regret at the resignation of Mr. Chamberlain, which he ,, considered WAN not called for, and strongly denounced the manner in which the report had been travestisd, perverted and exploited, as one of the most disgraceful in bistory and a degradation to the Press. The Prime Minister stated that the administration of the Mesopotamia campaign at present wee everything that was desirable. The guilty persons must be severely punished, but fair and impartial investigations of the facts were the first essential,

The subject dropped, and no vote was taken: --

London, July 14.

Mr. Lloyd George, in a passionate peroration during the Mesopotamis debate, dwelt on the waste of time in discussing "this miserable business.” He concluded by saying "For God's sake, lát na get on with the war."

gee vetoed the journey as sheer madness but nevertheless it succeeded. The third day after the launching of the boats on Lake Tanganyika the German gunboat Kingani of 40 tone was attacked and surrendered whereupon it was repaired and renamed Fifi. The secɔnd German fought with the Fifi and the Mimi on February 9 for three hours in & running fight and by skilful British manoeuvring and many hita was sunk. The third German was thereupon scattled by its czow after being bombed by a Belgian seroplane, thus ending German supremacy on the Lake which had been established for many years. The despatch draws sttration to Rhodesia's remarkable schievement with ferritory of 450,000 square miles and 1,800,000 natives and barely 30,000 Europeane in securing the borders against attack within nine months of the outbreak of war, in addition to. furnishing overseas regiments. Thus by the middle of 1916. forty per cent, of the male white population were on active service.
