SHIPPING NEWS.
3- Shipping Losses. The Ellerman liner Trantham Hall is reported to have stranded on May 26 and to have broken her back. She was of 4,173 tons, built at Newcastle in I-97. Lloyd's agent at Philadelphia telegraphed that a Norwegian barque which arrived at Delaware. Break-water on May 24 reportă having collided with and sunk the Norwegian” steamer Selje. The whole of the crew of the Selje were rescued and landed.. She was of 2.180 tons, built at Alblasserdam in 1900 as the Kinderdijk, and owned at Bergen.
Accumalation of Goods at Kob
In spite of current reports that nearly four hundred thousand tons of goods of all descriptions had accumulated at Kobe alone owing to lack of tonnage far foreign parts, the anthoritie have learnt, on elese examination of the actual condition, that the pressure of goods awaiting ship. ment is not so bad, as is generally bellared. Unfortunately, the officials have been forbidden to publish the results of their in- vestigations. Without waiting for any official' interferenes the carriers and shi pera can, it is. believed, arrive at a satisfactory

selves The real trouble is rather at Yok hame, where the acoum- mul-tion of goods for export is much more serious than '. supposed."Kobe Herald":
Leyland's Profit.
If the object of Frederick
Leyland and Co. in issuing
cryptic reports is to ward off remarks as to the dimensions of their profits in war-time we are afraid, says the "Manchester Guardian", they will be disap pointed, for the public takes a remarkable interest in the elucid- stion of wysteries, and financial oritics will take care they are.. served. The report for 1915 only made a mystery of the amount of the ord nary divide d, and it did not need much research to discover that the rate was 2411⁄2 per ce t, which, in the words of the directors, made the av rage dividend since the last one paid. (for 1901) 3 per cent. Reading the present sanouncement in the. same way, it indicates that the to al distribution for 1916 is 88 per cent. that rate added to last year's 44 bringing up the average for the last fiftee years to 712
