Matsuo Iron Works Shipbuilding.
A freight steamer of 3,330 to's gross register was launched recently from the Matsuo Iron Works dookyard at Koyagi, Nagasaki.. This vessel, which, was built for Mr. Sawayaina, of Nagasaki, is the largest yet . undertaken by the Matsuo Iron Worke
Seamen and Overtime. At a meeting of the Cardiff and Bristol Channel Shipowners Association, held recently at Cardiff, for the purpose of con sidering an application from the |National Sailors' and Fireman's Union for a fixed overtime agree- ment, four members water point.......... ed to confer with Mr. J. T. Duncan (Chairman of theShipping Federation) on the subject, which, it was resolved should be placed before the Shirping Federation to be dealt with nationally, 2
Wasted Food on Shipboard. "Joaquin Parreira, messroom. steward of a Portuguess steamer, was charged at Cardiff recently with wasting food, sad J. Soușă, chief steward. with permitting wastage.
The evidence showed that buckets filled with loaves. fruit, fish, and vegetables were emptied by Parreira: OD "8 refuse heap. In fiaing Parreira £5 or one month, the captain £40 or three months, and the chief steward £50 or three imontus. the Stipendiary said the ca 10 disclosed
a very graat scandal, and indicated the urgent necessity of providing further and greater re-trictions on the supply of food to ships crews.
Stone Ships.
Stone ships, which the Nor wegians propose to build by way of countervailing their. losses through submarines, are by no méans a nautical novelty. About a dozen years ago. the Italian Government took the lead in constructing battleships with "armoured concrete," and we' were told at the time that the example was being eagerly followed by the United States. Apparently no report on these experiments has hitherto been
pub ished. It was cla med that
warships built
of reinforoad concrets would possess greater ability to resist viclent shocks. and never require cleaning. painting, or repair, while any damage done by projectiles would be "purely locil" Moreover, the coast of construction with con- crete instead of steel is less than one half.

they succeed or fail, will have considerable importance. The motion" was carried, without debate, after a speech by the President of the House, Ee declared that Hamburg · kás suffered more from the war than any other German State or Ger man, city, and he proceeded: Even our hardly-tried Eastern Provinces are, as regards their losses apart from the loss of life-in an advants "eous postion as compared with Hamburg, because it will be easier to repair their losses with money, Houses which have been destroyed or Settle-burat out can be rebuilt, losses

prosperity depends upon trade and shipping, both have been atmost completely destroyed. Simple restoration, is impossible, because all the threads have been severed which united Hamburg with the whole world. The resumption of these communio“ stions will bifudditely difficult, in view of the hostility of the whole world, and in view of the p tiless competition of our enerales. It appears that Ham- bury intends to agitate for tha annexation or acquisition of certain Prussian territory, and also for railway conces Tons, development of waterways, and other special objects.
