SHIPPING NEWS,

Shipping at Newchwing. MAC ES Wakefie Com missioner of Customs A New- chwang in his report of 1915 statesat ies for theżyser. number 341, with, a' tonnage of 361, 30-a decrease of 45 Versals and a tonnate of r23,127. The deoreane under, the British “flag. is 54 vessels, rep esen'ing 84,75 tne while the Japanese bas. dropped by 6 representing 126.184 tous, and the Uhinese by 12. although the tonnage of the latter has eligh ly increased.

Dairen Shipping Dealing with the shipping of the Port of Daireo, Mr. T. Khara Acting Commissioner of the Maritio e Customs at that port in his report for 1916' says:-The total number of vessels entered "and cleared exceeded that of the previous year by 247, but the aggregate tonnage was leas by Bome 496,000 tons. Of the steamers of various nationalities, the British further diminished by 120 vessele, of 20800 tons, showing that more ships bave bean withdrawn from service. Japanese steamers numbered almost the same as in 19-5, but the tonnage fell off by 323,000 tons. As the regular services of Japanese steamers between this port and Japan, Shanghai, Tientsin, etc, have, bern main- tained almost the same as in ante-war time, the diminution must have been brought abort by the scarcity of larger-tṛpe. trimp steamers which sou b m relu rative employment els where. It may be interesting to nt, as an evidence of this state- ment, that of 56 larg. +13de steamers on the registry of the Kwantung government general **seven are at present emplˇ yeð in European waters. 32 are plying in American waters, 26 ure in the Suth Sea. Australian, and Indian waters, and only the remaining 11'ply in this part of the world. It was noted in the Trade Report for 1915 that the trade of the port w s being borne, by smaller type vessels. The average tonnage per vessel for the present year has been further reduced by a large increase in the number of sailing vessels entered: and cleared Compared with the figures for 1915, the volume of inward cargo increased by some 62,0 0 tons, owing to a flourishing import trade, while that of export fell off by more than 220,00 tons on account of a large diminui'ion of beans and core is exported. The app eciation of freleht rares noted in last year's Trade Report has continned through at the, year, and the rates have now. soared up to almost incredible. figures.

Chetoo Harbour Improvement Work

Mr. A. u den, the Commis- sioner of Custon's of Chefoo, in his report for 1916, ays-Dalay, as was t be expect d occurred. | Thes gave rise to much odticis

of the co tractors' methods by the public, as they were chiefr. in connection with the mora noticeable work, nam ly, the launching, placing in position and filing in of the big caisson of the for the southern nd breakwater; the keying of the first line of blocks into the caisson; and the washing Way twice of the island in the line of the mole due to construction · being a tempted solate in, the automa that galis caught it in an unfished condition It was always doubtful whether this work would be practicable until some protection is afforded by the breakwater. However much under water work, which makes a. si n, of the most dificult nature has been done.-901) foot of the foundation of the break- water his been rassed by the engineer-in-chie' of the commiss- io, and a further 900 feet auks weather favourable fo the diver's inspection; a great part of the. foundation of the mole has been completed and sufficient has been built up thereon to show the line clearly in rough wes her and part of it at low water. As 2 large number of lecks are ready to be placed in position there is every or spect'o some hundreds of feet of the bre; kwater being above water by nézt autumn; 30 per cent. of the big blocks there for ad 9 per cent. of the sman blocks are made: 6/25:hs of the work has, indeed, been d no, fivo- payments therefor havipe been made to the contracters -HkTis. 535,400 in all. 1he Russo-Asiatic Bank allows the commis i...n an overdraft pending the completion of a loan. In the early part of the year there was some agitation by the meeters · f vessels ag,last the conditions in the anchorage due to the, warz, but as they besame accustom d to the change ed· conditions they found ins 'reál dificulty, 4 194
