Appeal After German
Seizure of Ship.
to
The Court of Appeal recently delivered judament dismissing the appeal of the Produce Brokera Co, Ltd., from the decisions of Mr. Justica Lush, who had decided that they werent entitled to the return är £6399 paid
the Anglo-Chines Eastern Trading Co., who had sold them 1,00) tona of soya beans, which were seired at Hamburg on the outbreak of war by the German Government, together, with the British steamer Glenesca" in which they had been carried. There had been several resales, and, as to the last (to a German buyer) the appellants had parted with the bill of lading. They uged that they ware merely bailees of it, and it was waste paper immediately on the out- break of war.
American Ships for the Allier.
A recent Washington message stated that plans to release for Government use many coastwise vessels on both Atlantio and Pacific seaboards are under way among the chief railroads of the country. Many of the ships thus released probably will be used in the transportation of foodstuff- and supplies to the Allies pending the construction of the Govern- ment's feet of wooden vessels, the first of which will be ready in about five months. Steamships operating on the Great Lakes also will be used for the same purpose. The chief problem confrenting the railroads in working out the plan is to dispose of the burden of traffic at present carried by the coastwise vessels. The railroads are now operating almost to a maximum, but through proling their interests in equipment they hope to evalve, a plan under which most of the coast wine traffic can be diverted to rail lines.
Shipowner to Co-Operate": with Admiralty.
Mr. Arthur Ritson, shipɔ̃wper, Sunderland, has been invited by the Admiralty to co-operate with them in the consideration of pro. blems arising out of the sub- marine warfare. The approval of shipowners has given special satisfaction in Landon, where Mr. Ritson is well-known as an earnest advocate of and worker in the interets of British. shipping. It is understood that the Chamber of Shipping is taking active interest in the development of this scheme of co-operatiös, and that a special commitee of the Chamber will meet frequently fr the purpose of keep ng all questicas arising under close review. In this connection the opportunity aris s for shipowners to make known to the Chamber ruch ideas and proposa's as may be calculsred to advance the in- terests of all co corned, and it is anticipated that the special com- mittee will be able to render the most useful and valuab e esaist- Iance to the Government..
