What Cardiff Lacks. Mr. R. O. Sanderson. saya the "Journal of Commerce," is well known in South Wales for his staunch advocacy of fiscal re- form. When he is not engaged in elucidating the mysteries of State control of ships and Government regulations unend- ing, his mind is occupied with the question of British trade after the war. For some weeks he has been engaged on the compilation of a brochure on the Shipping Trade of Great Britaio, an extract from which he recently delivered at a lecute before the Cardiff Business Men's Club. Mr. Bau- derson deplores the fact that Cardiff doing a vast foreig trade, has RO commercial library attached to any of its institutions. The matter was brought by him before the attention of the Cardiff
hamber of Commerce.

Cunard Line's Progress. There is comfortable standing room in the new Cunard Building at Liverpool for a quarter of B million pe ple.. It is a very fing home for the great and expands ing shipping company, and its general air of luxury is indicated by the photographs which Mustrate a handsome book tellin " int-rested people all about it. "cafety first, profit second," was the practical motto of Samuel Cunard, George Burns, and David. MacIver. The Britannia of 1840 was 1,154 tops gross. The Scotis, 3,871 tona, the finest paddle ste mer that ever crossed the ccan, was built in 1622 The largest Cunarder in commission in 1830 was the Gallis, of 48 8 tons. Had only: the same rate of - progress been maintained during subsequent years, the biggest Cunarders of to-day would be the Caronia and Carinania, and we should still have to wait for the advent of a 50,000 tɔn Aquitanie.”
