214 ships arrive at parts of the United Kingdom from foreign waters every day in the year, while there are 780 airivals from bome ports of ships in the coast- wise trade. The merchant- marine of Great Britain includès nearly 12,000 ships of all kinds, of which about 2,800 are sailing ships, and 5,300 steam vessels employed in the home trade. There are approximately 4,000 shipa engaged in sailing between British and foreign ports, and these of an average capacity of more than 2,500 registered tons.
