According to an officer of the S. M. R. Can liner Kobe Maru, the shrinkage in the Yangtzze- kians is said to be the worst dur- ing the past five years, there seing only eight feet in Collinson Island Channel below Hankow. At Itzroy Island below Kiukisng the water is reported to have shoaled badly, 11 ft. being all that is avalable to vessels pr.ceeding to Kiukiang

The war marine insurance premiums on the Indian steamer services are keeping abnormally stiff, remarks the "Mancuria Daily News." The Calcutta- Olient rates are quoted at 1-2 per cent. But the rate under the Japanese War Marino Lademcity Law is no higher than 5 sen per G.Y100. Under such conditions, the Japanese marine insurance companies have come to fight shy of underwriting any steamers of cargoes on this line at such a low rate in the face of the heavy raks.
