My Lord,

I beg leave to recommend Mr. Ho Kai for some remuneration for the extra labour he has undertaken in translating documents for the use of the Chinese Contingent, and which had to be done entirely out of office hours.

Mr. Roundell

Mr. Meade. Mr. Holland, Mr. Herbert. Mr. Hugessen.

The interest on the special fund amounts roughly to $20,000 a year (5% on $400,000); & the present charges are about $9,500.

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No. 4294 of the 5th September recommending that Mr. Wodehouse should be allowed an extra allowance.

Governor.

I have no objection to your allowing Mr. Wodehouse £100 a year out of the interest of the Special Fund while acting in this appointment, as I understand you do not propose to place him on the permanent staff of the Department.

Superintendant of the Chinese Contingent of the Police.
