Depreciation of the Penny,

Spesing the metrio eyaleza e§ § i` luncheon of the City Livery Club at the Great Eng'ern Hotel en D:cember 4, over which Major Champness présided. Mr. Ed- ward O. Barton, of Queensland, caid Mr. Gladelone opposed the introduction of the system on the greand that it would deprociste the value of the penny, but the value of the penny was always depreciating, even in times of recce, and in the present wer it bad gone down 49 per cent. The caly important countries which had not adopted the decimal ayalm were Great Britain, the United States of America, and Rassia. In the last country there was a strong tendency to adopt the decimal style, and if Great Britain took the lead America would follow.

Mr. Schiff Repudiated. Washington, November 30.- Thanks in no small degree to the indiccretions of Mr. Jäcch Schiff the current German peace in trigue bas succumbed temporarily to Aux rican good conse. In a supplementary communication Mr. Telt apologizes for Mr. Sebil by me, but Faye that Mr. Schiff never intended to speak for the lecque. Less Whisky This Year. Altor January, aya the Central News, the Government will take over all the patent still whisky .made in Scotland, and only 10 per cent. of the present consump tion will be allowed to be distilled by malt distillere. "This course," said a prominent distiller to a roprofentative of the agency yesterday, "has been adopted for other reasons than the necessity of inculcating temperance by com- pulsion. No other substanos has yet been discovered for making Ligh explosives so satisfactory sa epirit. Of course, so far as this country is concerned, there will be a shortage of whisky for future concumplios, but at the present time there is no suggestion of the total probibitin of the liquer, and to long as it is not beyond the 30 per cent, now contemplated, it will continue to be procalable. In cupeequence of the short supply, however, it cannot be said

to what figore the price will go,

as there only remains a certain supply, which is almost entirely listed to Scotland."
