DESPATCH.

536

Quarterly Returns to 20 June /e

Sir Arthur Kennedy's Despatch No. 84 of 16 August, 1872.

Annex.

I have been through these returns; and I notice the following points:

Mr Tonnochy appointed acting Assistant Superintendent of Fire Brigade vice M. Russell.

I do not know why W. Russell should not have the full salary of that office, as well as of his Magistracy, while on leave.

Two of the Agencies at the Foreign Office have been filled up by gentlemen belonging to the Consular Service; I do not know whether the G.O. have anything to say to this.

There is a separate despatch from Sir A. Kennedy about Mr. Wodehouse's appointment to the Police.

As to the purchase of cutlery, I will send a further despatch, but it is not clear whether this $961 is in addition to the $5167 mentioned in XCR(85)72.
