the Pier Company was represented by Counsel and Mr Edmund Sheep; the Crown Solicitor appeared for Messrs. "N. Mody & Co.," the owners of property in the neighbourhood, who, in a similar manner to ourselves, strongly objected to the intended Pier unless the public accommodation were provided for in the fullest manner we have mentioned.
The Committee, having examined a number of witnesses and given the matter the fullest consideration, made their Report on the 18th November 1875, in which, after expressing their opinion that the erection of such a Pier would be an advantage to the Colony and recommending the passing of the Bill in an amended form, they say:
"We recommend that the Bill, as amended, be passed,
"In the trust that the Government, under the power therein conferred, will not sanction the creation of the Pier unless the Company are prepared to alter the plans so as to give facilities to foreign and Chinese boats for passing to and fro through the Pier at short distances from the Praya wall. For this purpose, we consider that there should be two openings...
