1916.
Novmber 7, 12.25 p.m. A semi-official message from Paris states:-Despite the des- cerat.on of the fighting on the Somme, ite real significance should not be misconstrued. It was not, as alleged by the Germans, a formidable blow on a front of twenty kilometres, with great forgen aa1 the whole power of the French artillery. Oar objective was more modest-it-consisted of the capturing or threatening more clowly of certain strong points whose conquest was indispensable before the starting of bigger operations. As the various positions were really fortresses is was necessary to approsch them carefully hence the difialty and momentary slowness of the present progress.
