Japanese Fishing Boats and
*" Gasoline" Eagines. The up-to-date Japanese säm* pan is now fitted with gasoline engines. According [American paper three Japaness companies, owing about 100 of these craft, have acquired practical monopoly of the fish- ing industry in the Hawailan Islands. The chief factors in the superiority of the Japanese fishermen over their competitors are said to be their boldness, and their willingness to go far out from land and wait at sea until the catch is large enough to give them a good profit. They are cer (ainly well rewarded. One of the companies, in a recent half- yearly report, showed that its receipts seldom fell below £100 a day, and during certain seasons roso considerably above that figure. Bome catches made by the larger boats average between

regarded as the precursor of the inauguration of a service to Aus tralia which seems a challenge to [the Nippon Yusen Kai hs, and it was prognosticated that keen competition would ensue between Japan's two largest steamrhip companies in the Australia service. The Nanking Maru, the first 0.8.K. ateamer to be sent to Australia, left Kobe for Sydney on October 20. It had been expected that she would carry a full cargo, but her Bipments proved less than 1,000 tons, as some of the shippers had cancelled their ap- plications. According to the "Asahi,” this is due to an announ- cement made by the Nippon. Yu- sen Kaisha that during the first part of November it would charter fiveateamers and place all of them on the Australien run.
