to the collapse of the Germans. One battalion had only five casual- ties while crowing x quarter of a mile of open country to occupy strong tranchas. A German division, which was most demoralised and which had just come from Amentieres, where she dugouts are deep and where life is easy, found on the Somme a desperate change.

"Prisoners say that owing to the British oannanade the Germans had no time or inclination to extricate their comrades who had been buried when a shell had burst; even man with their heads" ont were left to dis where they were.

The British suffered enough to demoralise any troope. Advancing slong a smooth slope, they wereexposed not only entirely to a storm of sbell but to deadly snipers. Yet snch was their coolness and confidenga in their artillery that their losses were comparatively light. A large it that took eleven lines of treaches during the last few wooks and advanced two and a half miles, remains a splendid fighting force and ready for anything.

Rumanians Prowess Confirmed.

[Seator'a Service to The Telegraph."]

October 6, 2.00 p.is.

בות

Information to the complicated and constantly. changing Rumanian military situation is meagre, but it w sufficient to confirm the anticipations of the Rumanians* prowess and skill,

The prompt counter strokes to General Mackensen's initial success at Dobrudja and to General Falkenbaya's blow at Hermannstadt foiled an enemy attempt to arrest the bold offensive in the Carpathians.

The Rumanian withdrawal at Fogaras, between Herman- stadt and Brasso, which was announced in a German comm- munique is not considered important, as the Rumanians bave already shown their competence to call a halt to Falkenhayn when the situation demands.

It is possible that the Rumanians in co-operation with victorious Allies' advance'in Macedonia' are now exerting their chief strength in Dobrudja, where General von Mackensen is recoiling under the steady pressure of the Russo- Rumanians.

It is now shown that the Rumanian crossing of the Dan ube was merely a daring raid on Mackensen's rear, quite in keeping with General Avarescu's reputation for audacity and resource.

The enemy accounts of this stroke are amusingly contra- dictory the Bulgarian communique asserting that "the Rumanians were surrounded," and the German communique saying that "the Bumanians avoided the encircling Bulgaro- German attack.

Russian's and Rumanians Progressing.

October 6, 11.20 p.m.

A Bucharest.communique reports that the Russiansand Roman- inna are progressing in the centre and on the left at Dobrudja, A retirement in the region of Fogaras is admitted.

Prospect of Early Decisive Successes.

October 7, 6,35 x.m.

A Petrograd message slates that the public have been warned not to expect rapid developments in Volbynia and Galicia, as the weather is unfavourable with rain, sleet and now, while the enemy has concentrated the main forces of his reserves there. Consequently every yard of the Russian advance will be contested; but it is intimated that there is a hopeful prospect of early decisive successes in the Balkans, especially if General Sarrail's rear can be secured by the adhesion of Greece to the Entente.

General Brussloff, whose operations are closely connect- ed with the Rumanian position, has now transferred his A new chief activity from Volbynia to northern Galicia. battle is developing on a 25 miles semi circular iront between the Brody and Tarnopol railways, where they converge towards Lemberg. Here General Sakharoff's troops are opposed by Generai Bochi Ermolli, who is resisting desper ately'.

The revival of the fighting at Brzczany farther south is due to the repeated Russian attacks against positions defended in a labyrinth of fallen trees, whose trunks and branches are plaited, with barbed wire. Some of these have been captured.

It is reported that the King of Rumania has congratu lated General Averescù on the brilliant results of the raid on the Bulgarian rear in Dobrudja, Fearful for the safety of their fanas sue Bulgarians desperately counter-attacked. These attacks were turned by the Allied cavalry.

Russian gunboats on the Danube shelled the Bulgarian Left from Bassova, while the Russians are advancing on a front now clearly defined as extending from Rassova to Per veli, on the Black Sea, 18 miles south of Constanza.

Thus the Allies hava recovered the initiative in Dobrudja.

Series of Naval Air Raide. -
