Singapore, Sept. 6th-The Colonial Secretary distributed the prises for 1915 and 1916 at the Medical School youterday. In the course of his speech he mid he did not think that their Medical : School suffered by comparison with that at Hongkong. There was every facility for students here, he believed, to encourage. scientific, technical and commer- cial education. A university here: would be valuable and fill a much 'needed" want.
Fire in Tokyo.
About one o'clock on Septem ber 1-fire broke out in'w building Fin the compound of the @ War: Office in Tokyo, the upstairs rooms of which were used as, the War Prisoners' Intelligence Office. The fire apparently originated | in thess: rooma and "when: the - outbreak was discovered by, a.“ patrol the dames" had already obtained a firm bold of the build- ing. The officers, who were quar tered in another building, barried to the soone of the fire to give the documents but they would not get in. The upstairs rooms, with all the documents, were destroyed. The F. M. B. A Cruel and Abominable Custom. Karschi, August 18.—A čase without legal precedent of infant in-arms_marriage bae occurred here. The court of the Judicial Commissioner of Bind has annuli- ada Mahomedan marriage in which the husband was not yet old enough to stand on his lege -the bride was a girl of ten years and the bridegroom a baby of twelve montha, The evidence showed that the bride's father hid squandered the whole of his pat- rimony in a life of debauchery and had contracted a marriage for his daughter which he knew to be prejudical to her for the sake of s dowry. The plaintiff was the mother of the girl. The court held that the marriage was & oruel and abominable thing and although there was no legal pre- sedent for reoliying such abush of paternal suthority, Mahomedas law does subject the paternal guardians for marriages to the control of the law and according- Ny the court annulled the marriage with coats against the father of the bride and the father of the bridegrom.
