Mesars, Benjamin and Potis, in their share report dated August 18, state-
The market has been rather dall during the week and the general tendency has been towards lower rates,
Hongkong and Shanghai. Banks have been sold at $740, ex the half yearly dividend of £2.3.0 @ Excb. 2/14 $20.54 paid on the 14th instant, and they continue in demand.
There is again very little business to report in either Marine or Fire Insurances. Unions were dealt in to a small extent at $920 and more shares are obtains ble. Hongkong Fires are still in demand at $385 at which rats a few shares changed hands.
Shipping shares have been rather quieter. Douglass slightly weakennd and after salon at $134 and #185) are probably obtainable at the latter rate. Deferred Indos have been dealt in to a fair extent, but are weaker again with sellers at $128. Macao Steamboats are rasier with possible sellers at $221. This is no doubt das to the outbreak of cholera in Macao; the Company hav Hongkong, Canton -- and ing decided to only keep one of their steamers on the run. Star Ferries are in good demand and have advanced to $36.
China Sugars bare further receded and sales have been made as low as $111, Malabons are still offering at $39; although there ham been some sales made at this cats.
Hongkong and Whampoa Dock, after obanging hands as low as $125), suddenly firmad up, which is attributable to the anccessful reboating of the steamer Wisley "sales being made as high as $120 fe, he Settlement, but are again easier with sellers at $128. Kowloop Wharven are firms with buyers at $88. Shanghai Dooks are lower with sellers at Tis. 67.
