I beg to lay before you the following correspondence, which I am sure it will receive that consideration from your Lordship to which it is entitled.

I procured leave of absence on the 18th May and returned to Office on the 27th of the following month.

During my absence, certain correspondence passed between the Hon. the Acting Auditor General and the Captain Superintendent of Police, which resulted in two charges being brought against me, to which I was duly called upon to reply.

The charges are as follows, as written by The Hon. the Acting Colonial Secretary:

1st. "That you failed to pay Mahomet Sha, Pf. 447, the sum of $2.50 per mensem conduct Allowance for September, October, November, and December 1871, and January 1872; the vouchers showing your signatures as witnessing the payments by the said sums, and the marks of Mahomet purporting to be receipts for the said sums."

2nd "That you failed to pay to Yum Ting (Seit Interpreter) the Gratuity...
